A stifled exhale escapes in relief as she pulls a charcoal pencil out of her waist pack, the woman flipping through her sketchpad to find a clear page. A nod then transpires as she sets everything up to draw the stranger.

❝Well, of course. Most artists that come up into Rapture are lucky enough
to have their work presented in galleries all over the Frolic. The others, well,
they’re not even looked at unless they’re super lucky. Anyway— do you want
your profile drawn from the waist or shoulders up? Whole body’s gonna cost
                 you extra.❞

“Shoulders up. I think I have a pretty good face.”

She was absolutely right. Every artist he knew had
their works idolized, framed under golden light. Well
Rapture was meant to be every man’s city, Perhaps
this artist would find herself up there one day. He
moves to a nearby bench, sitting down– posing–
so he could be drawn. Not before he fixed his coat
and straightened his tie.

“So… Have you been in Rapture long? Sometimes I feel like I’ve lived here all my life and sometimes it feels like I only moved here yesterday.”

She stops the passerby in his tracks, a
restricting smile becoming of glossed lips.

❝How about a portrait! Hm, sir? I draw them for only a
couple bucks, tops. I’m not too shoddy at it either, I
ensure you. I’ll only take a smidgen of your time.❞

It was a rare occasion, that he left the
confines of Arcadia. And Langford, was
no social butterfly so Klaus was slightly
shocked by the random encounter but,
he smiled.

“A portrait? Sure why not. Excuse me but… I don’t believe I see many street artists in Rapture.”

Then again. He didn’t see much of Rapture.

Diane stopped in her tracks when she heard the question. She hadn’t expected to hear anything on her walk back from Andrew’s office but the click of her heels and the hum of machinery. Hephaestus felt like a labyrinth sometimes, quiet and isolating and too easy to get lost in. She didn’t know how Andrew could bear staying there for more than a few hours, much less ten.

“I do.” Diane hesitated. Everyone wanted to talk to Andrew, but not all of them made appointments. “Is he expecting you? Mr. Ryan doesn’t like being interrupted.”

image

“Not really–” Andrew Ryan would not be expecting him. After all there was little communication between Ryan and his forest keeper, Langford. Even when they talked, it was brief and quick. She rathered to speak through her interns or so as it happened, Klaus himself. A recent breakthrough had sent the young scientist towards Hephaestus. Such a venture he never made often.

But his mind wandered, his gaze drifting back to the hanging portraits. Here in Rapture could he really reach his dreams– touch the stars– from the bottom of the sea. “What I’d do to be up on that wall. Suchong, Tenenbaum. Such names, such success.” His wistful thoughts were made audible, though he was unaware himself.

The young botanist stood there, staring off into the endless bubbling blue. His pace was slow, barely a stroll. A folder is pressed up against his chest, it’s addressed to Andrew Ryan himself. Three years, and he could barely find his way. The hours spent with Langford didn’t help, he rarely left Arcadia– the cradle of research. He turned to the wall, portraits illuminated by a soft blue hum– the marbled light that drifted through the water. Perhaps he’d be up there one day. With the likes of Yi Suchong and Brigid Tenenbuam. They had all come to Rapture for a better life. He noticed another soul. The only other he’d found in this sprawling expanse of an office.

“Would you happen to know the way to Mr Ryan’s office?”

🍂 the young Klaus Lin, at the end of his scientific doctorate received a promising letter: an invitation to the great city of RAPTURE. Invited by Andrew Ryan, Klaus was given the opportunity to work under Professor Julie Langford; the creator and keeper of Rapture’s Arcadia. He considers her the greatest botanist to ever live and her research soon becomes his. All that was green will bloom
