The forest itself was not too different from his own. It pulsated and flowed with life– he could hear little whispers in the wind, feel their song with the beat of his heart. These trees were old. Older and wiser than anything he’d encountered before. Older than him. Perhaps even older than the Grove or even older than the world. But it wasn’t finding a familiar forest and a not so familiar land that so enthralled the young man. It was a girl. Not a human girl but a girl nonetheless. It was her pale-eyes. the hair like flowing branches, skin like delicate petals. Such a sight gripped his heart– like a thorned rose had taken hold. Tightening. Squeezing. Thorns hooked deep. Bleeding it.
Oh the gods were cruel to give him such a sight.
For he had once known a being much like her. So full of life, of vital energy. Only one other time he had known a being that was anything like her and that time he fell in love. It was his first love, and perhaps it would be his final too. Klaus mouthed his name but speaking it aloud would have been too painful. He didn’t know what to do, he didn’t know what to say. But like the stupid idiot he was, he asked to dance because that’s what he would’ve done. Dancing in the moonlight, flanked by fireflies– it was bliss.
“Don’t worry. Just follow me.” She is cute, Klaus liked that. He watched with some awe as flower bloomed in her step. The blush of reds in her cheeks was reciprocated with a smile. Her little misstep was barely noticeable– he was too distracted. Too many little things floating around, memories old and new, flutter to and fro, by and by. Her rosy cheeks, small and timid. Her lithe fingers resting in his. To put it simply, she was like a rose. So beautiful, yet thorns dug deep– both pain and beauty– piercing the surface. She reminded Klaus too much of him. Of a love lost long ago. Vision, blurred a little– was there pollen in his eye? He continued to smile, yet his eyes watered.
